Trapped behind the scam

30 July marked UN World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and the centenary of the 1926 Slavery Convention.

To mark the day, the UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Eleanor Lyons and Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Chris Evans came together in a joint message recognising that, one hundred years after the Convention was adopted, modern slavery remains a serious and evolving threat [link]

This year's United Nations campaign, "Trapped Behind the Scam" highlights the growing exploitation of people who are coerced through threats, violence and deception into carrying out online scams. It is a stark reminder that organised criminal networks continue to adapt their methods, including through the use of technology to recruit, control and profit from victims.

As these threats change, so too must our response. Prevention, victim identification and support, and effective law enforcement all have a critical role to play in tackling modern slavery in all its forms. Awareness is one of our strongest tools. Recognising the signs of modern slavery and human trafficking can be the first step in identifying victims, disrupting exploitation and bringing perpetrators to justice.
